What Do I Need To Go Surfing? Beginners Guide

If you've ever watched someone catch a wave and thought, "I want to try that," you're in the right place. Surfing is more than just a sport - it's a lifestyle. But, like any new activity, getting started can feel overwhelming. What gear do you need? Where do you begin? How do you stay safe?

At Surf N Sea, we've been helping beginners and seasoned surfers hit the waves since 1965. So, if you're new to surfing and wondering what you need to get started, this beginner's guide covers you. From essential gear to helpful tips, here's everything you need to know to catch your first wave confidently.

The Essential Gear for Beginner Surfers

Surfboard

Your surfboard is, of course, the most crucial piece of equipment. The right board can make or break your first surfing experience for beginners.

Go for a soft-top longboard usually between 8 to 9 feet long. If you fall, these boards offer more stability, easier paddling, and a softer surface.

Why a soft-top board for beginners?

  • More forgiving if it hits you.

  • It is more straightforward to balance.

  • Great for small, beginner-friendly waves.

Once you gain experience, you can transition to shorter boards with different shapes for maneuverability and performance.

Leash

A surfboard leash attaches your back ankle to your board so you don't lose it in the waves. It's not just convenient—it's a safety essential. Ensure the leash is about the same length as your board and securely fastened.

Surf Wax or Traction Pad

Your board needs a grip. Surf wax is applied to the top surface of the board to help your feet stay planted when you pop up. Alternatively, some boards come with or allow you to add traction pads, especially near the tail.

Wetsuit, Rash Guard, or Swimwear

Depending on the water temperature, you'll want to wear the proper surf attire:

  • Wetsuit: Ideal for colder waters. It keeps you warm and offers extra protection.

  • Rash guard: Perfect for warm tropical locations like Hawaii. It protects you from the sun and prevents board rash.

  • Surf-friendly swimwear: Look for secure, performance-minded swimsuits that won't shift around in the water.

At Surf N Sea in Haleiwa, we carry a full range of surf apparel for all climates.

Sunscreen

The ocean reflects the sun's rays, increasing UV exposure. Wear a reef-safe, water-resistant sunscreen with broad-spectrum protection. Your skin will thank you.

Towel & Surf Poncho

After your session, you'll want a quick-dry towel or a changing poncho for comfort. A surf poncho makes changing out of your wetsuit easier while providing privacy.

Water & Snacks

Surfing is a workout. Bring plenty of water to stay hydrated and light snacks like fruit or energy bars to refuel after your session.

Optional But Helpful Items For Beginner Surfers

Surfboard Bag

Protect your board from dings, sun exposure, and heat damage during transport and storage.

Surf Hat or Cap

Keep the sun off your face while paddling out. Look for ones with chin straps designed for the water.

Waterproof Surf Watch

Keep track of time, tides, and sessions with a durable surf watch.

Choosing the Right Location

For beginners, wave size and beach type matter. Start at a beginner-friendly beach break with small, rolling waves, not heavy shore breaks or rocky reef spots.

If you're in Hawaii, you're in luck - Oahu's North Shore is legendary, but many mellow surf spots are perfect for learning.

Some great beginner spots include:

  • Puena Point (right near Surf N Sea)

  • Canoes in Waikiki

  • Turtle Bay on calmer days in Kahuku

Tip: Check the surf report before heading out and aim for waves 1 to 3 feet high when starting.

Safety Tips for New Surfers

1. Take a Lesson

We strongly recommend taking a beginner surf lesson. A certified instructor will teach proper technique, ocean safety, and etiquette. At Surf N Sea, our professional instructors have helped thousands of beginners safely get their start.

2. Learn Surf Etiquette

Just like the road has rules, so does the lineup. Key points include:

  • Don't drop in on someone's wave.

  • Take turns and be aware of your surroundings.

  • Respect locals and other surfers.

3. Know the Ocean Conditions

Before paddling out:

  • Check the tide, swell, and wind direction.

  • Know if there are rip currents.

  • Always enter and exit the water safely.

4. Don't Surf Alone

Always surf with a buddy or near others - especially when starting. It's safer and way more fun.

5. Stay Within Your Limits

If the waves look intimidating or you're tired, take a break or wait for a calmer day. Confidence builds over time.

How to Practice Your Surfing Skills

Surfing has a steep learning curve, but practicing the right way helps.

On the Beach:

  • Pop-up drills: Practice going from lying to standing quickly and smoothly.

  • Balance training: Use a balance board or practice yoga to improve core strength and coordination.

In the Water:

  • Paddling: Get comfortable paddling efficiently.

  • Positioning: Learn to sit and balance on your board while waiting for waves.

  • Timing: Practice catching whitewater waves before heading to the unbroken "green" waves.

When to Upgrade Your Gear

Once you're consistently catching waves, standing up, and turning, you might be ready for:

  • A shorter hardboard for more maneuverability.

  • A higher performance wetsuit or new surfwear.

  • Your board instead of renting.
