Surf N Sea, located in the heart of Haleʻiwa on Oahu's North Shore, has been a staple for surfers and ocean enthusiasts since 1965. The iconic yellow-and-brown building, constructed in 1921, is one of the oldest commercial structures in the area and is recognized as a historic building by the Hawaii Register of Historic Places.
Originally a general store, the building became Surf N Sea in the '60s, offering surfboards, diving gear, and rentals. In 1983, Joe Green, a passionate surfer from Florida, became a partner and eventually the sole owner. Under his leadership, the shop expanded its offerings, including surf, scuba, kayak, and snorkeling rentals and tours.
Joe, who moved to Hawaii in 1977, first started refurbishing and selling surfboards at swap meets before diving into the Surf N Sea business. With a carpenter’s background, Joe has been able to keep the building operational through the years while still keeping its vintage charm. With his wife, Naoko, together, they’ve created a family-operated business, with their children also involved in the shop’s daily activities.
The shop is home to a collection of over 150 vintage surfboards, including one from legendary surfer Duke Kahanamoku. In addition to surfboards, Surf N Sea sells beachwear, accessories, souvenirs, and a variety of merchandise with its iconic Surfer Crossing logo that has become a fan favorite.
Joe Green also crafts artisanal ukuleles, made from recycled wood, including some from the shop itself.
Despite challenges like hurricanes, termites, a COVID-19 pandemic, and most recently a massive flood, Surf N Sea remains a thriving destination, known for its friendly service and strong community presence.
